Puffin Books, aimed at the children's market, had started in 1940 and created a completely new market for paperback children's fiction, as well as non-fiction titles. The traditional literary journals, outlets for new publishing, had died during the war due to paper rationing, and after the war Penguin moved into and dominated, that market with Penguin New Writing, selling 80,000 copies a run.
